Re: General Discussion
Pretty good. I tend to reserve any major RP posts for the weekend to make sure I can do a good job since weekdays are busy, but things are going great.
Found a great Youtube channel revolving around a ram that some guy in New Zealand uses on his property in place of a guard dog. The ram attacks pretty much anything, whether it be inanimate objects, vehicles, machinery, or even people including his owner.

Glict! Hello! Been awhile since I've seen you!
Also, here's a link for one of the videos. Though the ram is an excellent deterrent for people trespassing on the property, Rambro is also highly destructive, and does pose something of a threat to the owner himself.

Re: General Discussion
Well, here's another video. The visual quality is very poor, but only the sound needs to work properly.
While most people breed chickens based on either meat or egg quality, and the breeding usually focuses on hens, there are also specialized chicken breeds that focus primarily on the roosters, namely their crow.
This in mind, there is a type of rooster breed that produces a crow like human laughter.

Re: General Discussion
We have a very tiny community. Hopefully the numbers will grow over time, but for now things are going very well.
Currently posting all these videos of an angry ram and chickens. The reality is that my family very deeply wishes to move out somewhere where we would be able to have a larger garden, and no neighborhood association with rulings that forbid keeping hens. Currently we have only a tiny property where our neighbors keep planting crape myrtles on one side and it's getting to the point where we can't grow anything edible in that patch of our yard. We're lucky all the flowers to attract insects and hummingbirds like it there, but it's still an issue.

Re: General Discussion
Here, Canis! Although you're right that my track record of being reliably active has always been pretty spotty. When I become involved in an RP I'll be on more.
And I hope you find  house with good yard space! My parents (Note: not me) have been working a lot on our own yard (at least, when it's not snowed over). I honestly think our house looks ten times better now than when we moved in because of it. If you're really serious about it, then good plants could change up the look of your house a lot.

Well Prussian, I look forward to seeing you get involved more in an RP. Have you thought about Travelers?

I wish you and your family luck Vipera with the house thing. I never liked the idea of homeowner's associations, a lot of the time they seem to be way to power hungry and overly regulatory, not even approving of things that actually make for a pretty darn good looking house (as was the case with my aunt).
Hopefully you guys can live further out in the county rather than the suburbs, then you could hopefully have a bit more leeway and space.

Re: General Discussion
Well, our house sits on a plot that's a quarter acre in size. We've done a lot to it, to the point that tons of neighbors are always talking about our yard looking like paradise. Plus, because we get everything from colorful songbirds to rabbits and skunks in a suburban-type area, there's constant questions about what we're always doing that all of these animals appear. Quality bird seed and a small water fountain is enough to attract animals, but insects are also attracted to it, especially during hot weather.
We have learned that the absolute best plants for attracting insects, butterflies, and hummingbirds is the Mexican petunia and porterweed. The Mexican petunia especially. They're very hardy, they get tall, bloom the entire growing season just about, and then the plants, as they get older, start leaning, fall over, and then each segment of those stems sprouts roots and the plant spreads. They also come back each year. Porterweed doesn't spread like this, but it does spread decently.
Overall, though, our problem is that we have a ton of daylilies and iris flowers that we could replace with the pollinator magnets, and we need to dig those up. The issue is, despite how pretty the flowers are, they only bloom briefly, and then look kind of bad the rest of the year, the heat where we live might be a little too intense so the leaves don't look healthy like they should.

Re: General Discussion
My RP's are seldom ones that go at a fast pace, Canis. People can't build anything around their characters if I rush to the plot, and I can't polish my own plots without time to carefully plan things out. There's also more people who considered joining, so I'm trying to make things easier for them to join by giving the beginning a little more time.
At any rate, it'll be over soon anyway. Mouse has just shown up, and the weird drama that I needed to get out of my system when I invented this RP idea is going to come to a close. If you have any other character ideas, you're going to want to hurry up and submit their sheets for approval, because Mouse is basically the signal that things are going to get serious very, very soon. If your characters don't appear in the cafe, they're going to wind up appearing in the middle of far worse scenarios.
Seriously, when I wrote the intro, I had the full intentions of making what happened at the very beginning as ridiculous as possible. Although there are definitely going to be dark, serious plots, there's going to be some silliness thrown in. I want people to know that a few goofball moments are perfectly acceptable. I want people to have fun with this story, it doesn't all have to be pain, suffering, and combat.

It was a joking comment Vipera, calm down xD
Anyway, I'm looking forward to things getting "very serious very, very soon". Insulting other characters and thinking sarcastic thoughts aren't all I have to offer and I would like to stretch Desin's legs

Re: General Discussion
I really need to hunker down today and get to work on character sheets.
@Terragon Would you have any objection to a pair of characters that have devices that allow them to have some idea of where a portal is going to take them? My idea was that it was a device that was able to pick up portals that went to worlds they had already visited, but were especially tuned towards their own world.

Re: General Discussion
I think that might be making the story too easy. If your devices can track the locations and pathways of permanent portals, or ones that close or open depending on the time of day but still have a fixed path that would have been fine, because I can see that happening, and some Travelers would use a device like this. This would work because the criteria is the location of a portal, and then taking a log of where that portal leads. You always remember it, but you still have to go through the portal to get the info.
If it's for any kind of portal, including irregular, and the criteria is simply the world it leads to because you've been there before, that's a little bit like cheating. Portals are like corridors, not direct rips that lead to another place. Because there's a little intermediate 'threshold' space between portals, my theory when I made the story is that a device meant to act as a compass wouldn't be able to see past that space. Secondly, compass-like portal trackers would entail that people have developed something that technologically advanced, where they can actually see through multiple dimensions using a machine. Worlds in the story can be very futuristic, but I don't think any of them should be so advanced that they've almost solved the mysteries behind portals.
This in mind, Portals are actually one of the main plots in the story, as I had intended, but the idea for it has changed a bit, so that's all I'm going to say on the matter, and that's like the very end of the story, so it won't be important until much later. The most I will tell you is that this plot will be more effective, the less the science of a portal's existence is understood.
Also, the RP aside, I ordered some seeds for a special kind of perennial tropical pea plant. They won't come in the mail until March (I'm presuming the plant bears seeds in March or late February, so I'll be getting fresh ones), but it's a fingers-crossed sort of thing because the plant has a low germination rate, and it's presumably too sensitive for people to ship the live specimen. It also won't sprout exclusively if you try to put it in soil directly. You have to do some special processes to ensure a plant will actually sprout, and the soil specifications appear to be very important.
This in mind, the special pea plant is called a Telegraph Plant, and is one of the handful of plants in the world capable of rapid movement visible to the naked eye, classed alongside Venus Flytraps and a special type of Mimosa tree that collapses down its leaves when touched. The plant has small, disk-like leaves that rotate in an almost mechanical-looking fashion, part of why the plant has its name, and larger, hinged leaves that twitch and collapse down at night. The plant moves in response to sound, especially regarding high-frequency. The exact reason for the plant's unusual characteristics is unknown, but it was originally though the leaves shook off rainwater, or that maybe it deters predators. Today it's thought that the plant moves to follow sunlight.
Hence, here's a video of the thing. This is one that has been sped up, but the camera is far steadier than home-made videos, so you can tell that it wasn't just someone bumping the plant. It has some weird music, but this is basically what the plant does on a constant basis during the day. I only put it as a link because one of the follow-up videos has a thumbnail photo of a specific plant that looks uncannily like something offensive. Yes, it's a plant, but I still wasn't comfortable with it.
